I’m going to visit my friend Sarah tonight, a lovely woman with an office in two countries, a wardrobe I plan on borrowing from some day, and a real working brain. She is a delightful and driven person. Her synapses fire at the speed of – well, something really really fast – and best if all, she is on painkillers.
Mwa ha ha haaaaa. I’ll have to go through her closet tonight while she’s still compliant.
I was unaware of her need for prescription meds until just a day or two ago, when I logged in to Facebook and was promptly reminded that I was a bad friend.
Her update reflects a recent surgery. She has been laid up for almost a full week now, and my status as Good Person and Attentive Friend, at least in my own mind, is about to be revoked.
I call.
“Pearl!” she squeals over the phone. “You’re coming to see me tonight, aren’t you?” Her normally bubbly self has been supplanted by an even more effervescent version.
“Sarah, what are you on?”
She giggles. “I had surgery.”
You have to laugh. Kids these days.
“I saw that,” I said. “What surgery? What’s with the surgery?”
“Ooooooh,” she trails off. Her voice takes on a dreamy quality normally associated with massages and satisfying sex. “A nice man helped me with a heavy suitcase and he dropped it on my foot. Come here, Bets! Here, Bets!”
Sarah is calling to her dog, Betsy The Beagle.
She giggles again. “You wanna come over? You can make me a grilled cheese. That’s what I want. A grilled cheese.”
Do I want to come over? What, and make a grilled cheese sandwich for a funny, beautiful woman on prescription painkillers?!
I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

You are a good friend!
And a heckuva grilled cheese maker! :-)
Aw! You ARE a good friend. (But I think those prescription painkillers might be a slight incentive as well.)
JD, she'll be on drugs. I'm pretty sure I can take her. :-)
women on prescription painkillers are a buttload of fun.
i love how creepy that sounds coming from a vile old man like me
I hope you make some tomato soup to go with that grilled cheese...because that's what America is all about!
=]
My kids are hilarious on the happy juice they give them before surgeries. I bit less happy afterwards tho.
I hope you make the grilled cheese in a pan. The wife bought a Foreman and it aint near as good that way. I am with Sweet Cheeks on this. Ya gotta have mater soup with grilled cheese.
you are awesome friend to have...
have fun!
Oh Pearl, I could have used a good friend like you when I had that tumor removed from my spine! (Ouch, PTSD just struck a nerve, for reals.) Grilled cheese for my leather coat? Would have been just fine by me.
This was good. No, this was GREAT! I think I'll go make a grilled cheese and deep-bark like a beagle as it fries (the sandwich, not the pooch), living vicariously through you and Sarah! Thank yous for lunch! (P.S. Get well wishes to Miss Sarah. Thanks!)
I love grilled cheese sammichez!!! And the tomato soup for dipping must be made with milk, not water. Hey Lady, I'll drop some bricks on my feet if you would come over and make me a sandwich. :) Yes indeed Pearl, you are a great friend...
I remember when my husband had surgery done on his hand last year and he went around with a perfectly inane smile all the time for a week!!
AMEN to Irisheyes! You gotta keep those friends that are prone to having surgeries resulting in painkiller prescriptions close! (Its why my husband keeps me around.)
Great stuff
we stole stuff
What a wonderful friend you are! :D
Two of my favorite things are painkillers and grilled cheese sammiches. Honest, you can Google it. Go visit but don't forget to fill your pockets and your trunk when you leave. You might never get a better chance. Called it a 'nursing fee' and we need never speak of it again.
Ooooh...snag something nice for me!
;-) A.
I hope she makes really great grilled cheese, because if you use too much butter, they can be really soggy.
GREAT ending Pearl. You made me laugh out loud.
Any Grilled Cheese Sandwiches left???
jj
Lortab! I hope she's on Lortab! And that you had three and then had a deliciously-needed breakdown, sobbing crazily into her melty cheese.
In the name of a therapeutic release, of course.
Youre such a good friend...but a really good friend will remember to take her movie camera or web cam and post the results on YouTube for the rest of us good friends....have fun!
What a score! Painkillers are a wonderful thing when medically required.
Like when you are having a bad hair day.
Enjoy them grilled cheese sammiches!
Surgery from a suitcase dropped on her foot? Poor thing.
