And Then Archie and Jughead are Coming Over and We’re Having Malts

Having the flu is the perfect opportunity to catch up on your reading.

I would like to report that I have spent the time reading Anna Karenina, as I’ve meant to for a couple years now.

I’d like to report that, but that would be lying; and I believe we all know where I stand on that.

I’m against it.

No, no, no. I’ve spent the last three days not only reading the first three Harry Potter books, but I’ve also managed to fit in a viewing of the first Harry Potter video.

I am a veritable fount of Hogwart information over here.

For example, did you know that non-magic folk are referred to as “Muggles”? Did you know Harry could’ve been in the House of Slytherin but he specifically requested that he not be assigned to them? Did you know that Hermione comes off as insufferable initially but when you get to know her you find that she’s both really, really smart but also a true friend?

Did you know that talking to me right now is like talking to a third grader?

If I were at Hogwart’s, I would totally try to be Hermione’s friend.

Sigh.

  1. I don't even have illness as an excuse. I'm a Harry Potter nerd all the time. But hey - at least it keeps me off the Twilight Crack. Which of course I read - but I'll never join the ranks of the vampire obsessed. Teenage wizards? Totally different story...

  2. Hermoine rocks! Altho, as my 18 year old H.P. crazed daughter could tell you, she is NOT like the girl in the movie at all.
Which House would YOU be in???
    Feel better!

  3. Hermione would be lucky to have a friend like you, Pearl.

I hope you feel better soon. If I were closer I' d make you some chicken soup(my soup heals pain) and maybe a nice apple crisp. Yeah, apple crisp is in order, please have someone that lives near by make you an apple crisp with lots of cinnamon, it will help.

  4. Gosh, I love(d) reading the Archie's Comics Digests, the Readers Digest, palm size package of cartoon high jinx. Pearl are you a Betty or Veronica?

  5. I loved Archie comics when I was a kid! Good to see you're keeping your mind stimulated and I agree with Powdergirl--Hermione would be lucky to have a friend like you. Your almost-last line is a perfect imitation of a third grade girl.

  6. Harry Potter seems like the perfect read when you're sick...engrossing, entertaining, fun. I'd rather not get the flu, but if I do I know what I'm gonna read!

  7. That's odd. I finished Dirk Gently's Holistic Deteve Agency and started Frankenstein when I got the flu.

  9. At least Hermione was smart enough to get ON the train, not get run over by it like Anna.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  12. One of the comforts of ill health is a huge pile of comics and a warming posset.

  13. when you have those malts be sure not to drink too fast... you wouldn't want to get brain freeze on top of the Potter virus

  14. I used to love the Archie comice. I hated Veronica though...just a meanie. Betty was my girl.
I've read all of the Potter books. I love them.

Good to hear you're coming alone with the sickness....did you use some oinkment?

  15. I suggest Terry Pratchatt's Diskworld books as medicine. "Good Omens", written with Neil Gaimon would also be a good choice.

And chicken soup spiced with cinnamon stick, star anise, black peppercorn, and parsley root.

  21. OMG ... I LOVE LOVE LOVE Harry Potter and I'm not ashamed to admit it either!!! Seriously though, I do ... I've read the whole series, several times. I don't mind talking like a third grader afterwards either!!!

  22. Let me get this straight. This was:
    a. during the fever.
    b. after the fever.
    c. Maybe before it?

  23. Illness does that to you. Comfort reading is like comfort food. Not really nourishing, but oh, so satisfying going down.

  24. If you're still sick [and I hope you are not] toss H.P. and go read "The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo," by Stieg Larsson. You won't be sorry!

I've gotten rather tight for time and must decline awards. I love them, but I'd rather be posting something new and making more time to respond to your comments. A heartfelt thanks to all those who have considered me for a nomination. You know how I love you.
