I Just Keep Thinking of Those Gauchos

Some things never go out of style. A black pencil skirt, for example. Buy a good lined skirt, try not to gain any weight, and you’re going to get a lot of use out of it.

But some things kinda came and went, didn’t they? Is there a Nehru jacket in your closet? A dashiki? A pair of gauchos? (Which amuses me to this day, as I believe a “gaucho” is Spanish for “cowboy”, in which case I may not have a pair of gauchos in my closet but would certainly entertain the idea of adopting a couple – for altruistic purposes, of course.)

I told someone once that I would wholeheartedly endorse a work uniform; and I’m still up for it. Hell – I’m thinking of doing it without it being a requirement. Would anyone notice if I were to, say, come in to work every day in a blue skirt, a white blouse, and maybe a scarf around my neck, just for a bit of “look-how-I’ve-dressed-this-up” jauntiness?

But it’s not just clothing. Even foods seem to have eras. At one time in the U.S. every fast food joint had a “potato bar”. Chili on your tater? Cheese? Sour cream? Jellied eel? Hey!  Just how much crap can you pile on a tuber, anyway?

That reminds me:  when was the last time we had fondue? Don’t you think it’s time?

We get bored, I think. How else to explain that this year’s “teal” is different than last year’s “aquamarine” or that the square-toed sturdiness of a Birkenstock differs from the square-toed sturdiness of a pair of Börns?

Or maybe it’s not boredom. Maybe it’s the need to be able to judge others based solely on having the right shade of blue on. Or maybe it’s a way of generating year-over-year profit.

Either way, I’m thinking a nice, proletariat “work uniform” never goes out of style.

A work uniform would make life so much easier. Being fashion-challenged, I'm totally up for it... and some fondue!

" Or maybe it’s a way of generating year-over-year profit." That.

Funny you should mention fondue. Spouse has been on about a fondue party, whatever that is. Scarce realized, though, that you are old enough to recall such things.

I have absolutely no fashion sense. I do have horses, however, and although that does not make me a gaucho I'd be happy to hide in your closet now and then. As long as my wife doesn't find out. :)

Pearl, it's what I keep preaching...it's the fashion industry yanking your chain. Everything is in fashion. It just depends on who you are and how you carry it off. Also, you're in luck, say hello to Gauchos for fall:

In Rhode Island there is a fondue restaurant. Come visit. Everything tastes better with cheese.

Work uniform, yes! Here's mine: dark bottom, light top. One piece of jewelry aside from the watch (can't wear scarves.) Works for me. Fashion is a money pit.

Wore uniforms for 30+ years, usually includes at least yearly inspections. Dry Cleaning, etc. Might still be a better choice than my "fashion" sense however.

I want fondue now. With a side of baked potato. Impressionable much?

The last stand I took against management control was wearing men's suits to work. And shirts and ties and belts and socks and wingtips. Oh, and the proper belts of course. Thinking back, I'm sorry I didn't try for braces.

Drats. I'm trying to remember what a gaucho is, but I can't. I checked with Lord Google, only to see that I wouldn't mind adopting a few gauchos, provided they meet basic requirements: must be between 35-53, cute, single and good team players. Wait, I just had a horrible image of a pair of pants that flair out midway between knee and ankle. Never mind. I don't want any.

Hope you're well, Pearl. Thanks for visiting.

In my 40-year meteoric rise from farmhand to gardener I never had to change out of my play clothes. It CAN be done!

Corporate standard definitely has something going for it; I loved it. On the casual front... fashion? Blargh. Create your own I say... YAM xx

I could use a couple gauchos in my closet--I would put them t work!
I always love the palazzo pants and bell-bottoms. They hid the fact that I had knock knees and slightly bowed legs. Peasant blouses were a favorite. I did not like tube tops though...had a very bad experience wearing one once due to being flat-chested. Still haunts me! I love the feathers in the hair and tiny braids with leather woven in. That was quite fashionable in California. Hot pants did not look so great on me because I was so thin (not up to 100 pounds) and felt I looked like a skeleton! My husband thought it was hot...go figure!

Now I want baked potato with a bit of fondue cheese. You sure rang my memory bell. My mom wore gauchos and I wore culottes...or were they the same?

I always liked the idea of a work uniform myself...still...the idea of a pair or two of gauchos in my closet........

Pull out them gauchos girl, they are back. I am not pulling your soon-to-be-gauchoed leg.

Work uniforms are practical and a good idea, I think. Easy for me to say since I work from home and can wear whatever I please. The dog is fine with whatever I decide on. :)

Put me down for some fondue too please.
