Puff, The Magic Drawer

What?  Well, sure you can sit there.  Sit anywhere you like, just don’t open that drawer.

I shouldn’t have said anything.

You’re going to open that drawer now, aren’t you?

You realize that the sound of the drawer opening is going to have repercussions, right?

Look at you, throwing caution to the wind.  You’re going to do it, aren’t you?  You, with your hand on the drawer pull.  Go ahead.  Open it.  Just don’t say I didn’t warn --

Wow.  You couldn’t even wait for me to finish the sentence, could you?

Like so many other actions, the simple act of opening a specific drawer in the living room at my place has an immediate reaction.

Dolly Gee Squeakers, formerly of the Humane Society Squeakers, knows all about that drawer, and upon the sound of wood on sliding wood, comes shooting out of the hall, out of the pile of yet-to-be-washed towels she has buried herself in, and drops her fuzzy butt at your feet.

“Mrrrow?”

“I’m just getting the hand lotion,” I say, closing the drawer.

The cat believes this to be a lie, fixes her blue eyes on me – or are they on the wall behind me?  With her slightly crossed eyes, it can be hard to tell.

“No,” I say.

She cocks her head to one side, surveys the surface of the coffee table.  If the drawer has been opened, surely treats cannot be far behind?

She stands on her hind legs, cautiously runs a front paw over the surface of the coffee table.  She tilts her head, squints her eyes.  I’ve long suspected that Dolly Gee, long-haired foot-traffic obstacle and esteemed Squeaker of the House, may be ever-so-slightly seeing-impaired.

She feels around again.

Nope.  Still no treats.

Dang it.  She’s just so cute when she does that…

I open the old drawer, and there is the sound of wood on wood.

“Mrrrow?”

And I pull out the Pounce treats.

Just to see Dolly stand on her hind legs.

If I were a cat, I'd want to be Dolly Gee. And I'd want you to give me Pounce treats. Love that Dolly Gee-

At my house it is the sound of opening a bag of sliced turkey from the deli. It drives the cats nuts.

EVERY girl has a few tricks up her sleeves (or furry legs)...

Shelly, if you stood up on your little legs and surveyed the coffee table as thoroughly as she does, I would certainly offer you treats. :-)

Simply, opening a can in the kitchen will get that response from Liza Bean.

Sioux, she's playing me, isn't she?!

I guess it's too late to close the drawer now isn't it???

Leenie, I feel I may have had a small part in little Dolly's expectations.

Our several cats came running when they heard a kitchen cabinet open, and they hung around if it turned out to be the canned food cabinet. But one, the late Mali, only came when I took out a can of tuna. I do not know how she could tell, but she knew.

Who says you can't train a cat?

Or a human, for that matter!

I can just see her checking for those treats with her paw. :D My dog knows which cupboard door in the kitchen hides the dog treats too and is always sticking his nose in there.

Mine come running when they hear me stir my coffee in the kitchen. Why? I'm glad you asked. I made the mistake one time of giving two of them a small amount of my half-n-half and now they're addicted. They even recognize the purple carton it comes in. Stirring coffee means instant ankle warmers.

I can just picture Dolly burrowing in a pile of towels to be warm and pealing out to the sound of food. How cute that she closely examines and pats the coffee table. :-)

Out of my pride, three of them seem to have problems seeing up close but not distances, by golly. They tend to use their paws to make sure something is where they think it is.

Oh, too cute! Does she like ear wax? Our cats have all loved ear wax. I DID NOT DISCOVER THIS MYSELF. It took a gross teenage boy to find it out. But they go NUTS for ear wax.

You want to try it. You know you do.

Blissed, oh, the kitties and their inscrutable ways!

jenny_o, :-) I've been trained, and I even saw it coming...

Daisy, it's a good thing they're so adorable!

Sia, maybe that's it. Maybe Dolly is myopic!

Flea, OMG. I honestly laughed aloud. Dolly sticks her nose in my ears when I'm sleeping... :-)

If my brother-in-law crosses the kitchen threshold, cats go with him. He is the treat drawer.

No matter where you keep the bag the sound of it rustling is enough to bring them...they just know.

My husband does the same thing after Halloween when I've hidden the leftover candy!!

Joanne, what a wonderful visual!

Delores, there is certainly more to meet the eye with the kittehs...

fishducky, :-) I've been known to stalk a bowl of candy myself!

I'm in love with Dolly Gee. Too darn smart!

If cats ever develop opposable thumbs we're all toast

Cute, Ray. :-)

Busy Bee, her true cleverness lies not so much in being clever but in being really attractive. :-)

Silliyak, I'm barely holding on to my position of authority as it is!

We have a drawer in our living room that does the same thing to our two cats. The funny thing is that the reason they know that drawer is because that's where their toys were when they were kittens. Neither of them like cat toys any more yet both come running anytime the drawer opens.

Oh gosh do I know this routine! At my house, it's the rattling of any sack...whatever it may be...the cat comes running. She has bionic ears.

Merlesworld said...

They know don't they, I can go to the fridge a lot in the day but if I'm having a ham sandwich or getting mince out my 4 little furballs just know and want their bit.

I have been well trained. And the furry despots know it. I love that Dolly G and Liza B have your wrapped around their furry little paws.
Ear wax? I am so not going there. I really, really don't want them helping themselves...

Oh yeah, all the four-legs of the world know exactly how to train their hoomans; it's bred into them. What we have to do is over-ride the 'cute' gene... too hard?

Yeah. I know.

(- and the decent i'net connection? Up here at the local council library - say 'yaay' for taxes... Point number two - travelling alone? It's what got me where I am.

That's a good thing.) YAM xx

I swear our cat keeps a little cat calendar somewhere, because she knows when it's Sunday, and browbeats us until we give her her weekly "special" soft food.

And she's at the kitchen cupboard promptly at 8pm every. single. night. Because she knows that's when she gets her nightly treats. Her timing is uncanny.

Rose L said...

I keep my cat treats in a low cabinet and every once in awhile I will hear the thunk of it trying to open and not quite, then holler "Mooshoo, get out of that cabinet!" She (a gray striped tabby with brown fur on her bottom-and yes, it is fur and nothing else) keeps trying to pull it open with her paw.

Susan Kane said...

I think your cats are smart enough to tie you up, steal the Pounce treats, take your purse, and head out for a night on the town.

Be cautious.

Geo. said...

Having only recently learned to stand on my hind legs (couldn't see any sense in it until I retired), I can't help wondering if Pounce would have accelerated the process.

I love my mental image now of Dolly G squinting and swiping across the coffee table for treats.
We once had a German Shepherd who kept track of the days of the week. We came and went all the time, but shopping days, he would be hanging over the back gate waiting for us to return with his big beef shin bone.

Hootin Anni said...

Awwwwwwwwwww, you old softy you. Pounce treats just to see her reactions and begging. Gotta love it. A PURRfect post. But, I have a question--------you have drawers holding/hiding lotion, in the living room?

My husband does the same thing. I have trained him with chips. If I need to find him and can't, I just shake a bag.
