He Knows a Guy Who Knows a Guy Who Can Get Him Recording Time

The bus came alive yesterday afternoon with the appearance of my favorite entertainer: MC Mumbles.

You know MC Mumbles, don’t you? He’s the guy on public transportation, the man mysteriously rapping into his cell phone, complete with hand gestures and appropriate facial tics and lip movements.

He is gloriously, even recklessly engrossed in the storyline currently running through his mind.

For that, I applaud him.

You know, most public-transportation lip-synchers are wearing headphones, singing/rapping to music others have created, somehow immersing themselves in the belief that not only do they have similar skills to the ones they are listening to but that others are as enamored of their abilities as they are, perhaps even thinking "you know? That guy sounds just like...".

I leave it to you to fill in the blank.

But, see, that’s where MC Mumbles has risen head and shoulders above the fray: he don’t need no steenkin’ recorded music. All this guy needs is an audience, something to use as a microphone, and those dulcet mumbling tones of his…

I like to imagine MC Mumbles and his crew, the Watchoo Lookinats, rolling across the U.S., enlightening the masses without actually acknowledging them, sullenly a-slouch in as many seats as possible.

It's a new twist on an old need.

You get out and around, right? Do me a favor. If you see MC Mumbles, tell him “hey” for me.

Tell him I was at his Minneapolis show.

I've never seen this guy!

Is he actually rapping into his phone, like it's on and he might be leaving himself a rhyme on his home voicemail? So he doesn't forget it!

Or is he just using his cell phone as a fake mic prop?

Props either way, I guess.

dogimo, I'm pretty sure he was just using the phone as a mic, something like what I did with my hairbrush when I was little.

Yeah. Little. :-)

I read that as McMumbles and all I got in my head was some jacked up McDonald's character...

I like to sing while working out in the shop. My co-worker will ask,"Who sings that song?". When I answer he always say, "Why dont you just let him sing it".

No appreciation for the Arts.

Only you could make me feel nostalgia for riding the bus. That, my dear, is talent.

Come to San Francisco and I'll show ya! We have a whole 'nother box of crayons for our color of crazy here.

I have been banned from singing ANYWHERE!

I haven't a clue why. My "Bat out of Hell" is fantastic!!!

Erm ... would someone kindly tell an oldie what rapping is.

I love it! I used to see MC Mumbles on the Chicago subway coming in from Rosemont. Good shows could be had at 6:14 a.m.

the utter talent that MC Mumbles displays makes me constantly question my own.

The McMumbles of the world are just frustrated Karaoke singers. These poor deluded guys have delusions of being "discovered" by a big-time record producer whose Porsche is the the shop this morning. Hey, it could happen!

Here in Seattle MC Mumbles doesn't even use a mic. I guess he's unplugged or something. His crew, the Watchoo Lookinats, was priceless!

I do know MC Mumbles. That dude is on my train every morning!

There used to be a guy on the train listening to his radio/music in full blast, and he ignored people's requests to turn it down. I'd take mc mumbles anytime.

So do you travel on transit and see these types? I'm sure they are around somewhere. Interesting post.

As always you are just too funny Pearl... I'll bet you cant wait for his next open concert so you can be in the front row with all the other groupies. (or so he's thinking)

Pearl, seriously you make me want to start taking the bus - just so I can witness some of these gems myself. Unfortunately, with our lackadaisical public transportation system it would take me three hours to get 20 minutes from here.....so not worth it. Oh, but the blogging material......

We have our versions of MC Mumbles in Chennai, India. They just have different names but same spirits which continue to . . .

Joy always,

I used to see this guy in NYC! I wonder when he moved to Minneapolis? Probably about the same time I left. I was his biggest fan.
