A Ride to the Airport, or Heeeeeeeeey! What Are You Doing Later?

There is nothing like being asked to drive someone to the airport to reinforce one’s own sense of self-worth.

Do I want to drive you to the airport Friday morning? Well, sure I do! What else would I be doing if I weren’t getting up earlier than I had expected I would, picking you up and schlepping your butt to the Hubert H. Humphrey Terminal?

So when I got the call Wednesday, you gotta know that I jumped at the chance.

It was T on the phone.

“I need a favor,” he said.

“What’s going on?”

“What are you doing Friday morning? ‘Cause I’m packing my pants,” he said.

I had to shake my head a bit at that one. He’s packing his pants? Why, I oughta… “Are you coming on to me?”

As it turns out, the answer to that is “no”. No, he was not.

Man. I’m telling you, once you’re married, the action really drops off.

As it turns out, he was packing his pants – and his shirts, his socks, and his copy of Chicken Soup for the Follicle-ly-Challenged Soul, too. He was flying to Florida for a weekend get-away at his sister’s place.

And would I drive him to the airport?

You betcha.

Because it’s Friday, I’m not working, and I got nothing better to do.

And one of these days I am so calling this favor in.

You're a good sport, Pearl. It is OK to say no to such requests sometimes.

That is better than, "Do you think that you can help me move?" LOL!

Wow... I was just recently in a similar situation and I had to go back and read a post I'd written called "The Power of No." Here's the link if you have an interest.

Although, it is hard to say no when a "friend" calls for a favor early in the morning before you've had time to slipped in that caffeine IV. That's an ambush.

At least you get nice, practical requests.

Here's a coupla recent favors asked of me.

"Could you write to that "Pimp My Ride Show" and try to get my car fixed'?.

Or,
"Could you make my kid go to school?

I know, weird.

Is this a form of bartering?

That won't get us all out of this fiscal crisis now will it?

The nearest airport to me that is of any worth is around 90 miles. I do not volunteer my time and vehicle lightly.

Oh, I don't know about that. You should have seen the absolutely leering smile I got while giving the wine at Mass tonight. First time come on while distributing communion. You just never know...

I don't help people move either anymore, and I certainly don't help paint. But I'll bake them something!

Thanks for the visit. I'll be back here to read more of you. :)

I m now uneasy....friends have been fetching me from trains and will drive me to the station in a while to get home.....what will the return favour turn out to be?
Well, knowing these two, just collecting them and returning them when they visit me.
But with some of our friends.....I shall be considering greater independence.

Wait, there's a "Chicken Soup for the Follicly Challenged Soul"?

I might need that.

I guess this kills my idea to check rates to Mexico this winter from Minnesota and staying at your place and having you take me to and from the airport then?

Hmmmmm, follicle-ly challenged? I resemble that remark.

Anyway, favors always come with paybacks.

myself and the car lifting friends used to take turns driving each other to the airport. We would get there early and celebrate the departure by drinking a wee bit of vodka in the local airport lounge, known of course for its tasty pretzels and high prices. sometimes we forgot who was going and who was staying!
