It Only LOOKS Like I’m not Paying Attention. I’m Actually Deep in Thought.

Sunday was a post-card-picture day in Minneapolis, a day of brilliantly blue skies, the odd cotton ball of a cloud pushed overhead by the perfect clothes-line wind.

It was the ideal day to be ever-so-slightly hungover.

But hey! I did it to myself; and if you don’t mind me saying, I did it on purpose. It’s been a long time since I sat with friends on Kathy’s deck. Beer was consumed, problems solved, plans made for the upcoming Kegger in the Woods.

And today, I got exactly what I asked for. I am reasonably hungover, a mildly sedated condition in which I come up with some of my best ideas.

No, I’m serious!

For example, my dock installation and removal service. Think of it: 10,000 lakes! All of those docks going in the water at roughly the same time every Spring, all those docks coming out of the water before it freezes.

Equipment needed? A dozen wrenches (which will cover you up to the first 11 wrenches you drop in the water).

Some business cards.

Brute strength.

Oh, yes. And an interest in doing it.

Hmmm.

Still. It was an idea nonetheless.

This morning’s idea?

A chili cook-off.

Ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you to my latest brainchild, the First Annual Chili Invitational, an event tentatively slated for October 17th, an event guaranteed to bring in chilis and an excuse for me to create a hokey trophy that no doubt absolutely several people would proudly display on their mantle.

Or stuff into the backs of their closets.

Either way! What it really is is an excuse to fit a party in between the Summer Party and the Winter Party.

I’m so clever.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a dark cool room to lie in until I am forced to cook dinner.

And chili and cornbread recipes to Google.

Almost every civilization since the dawn of man has had a autumnal celebration to welcome in the harvest.

I think a chili contest is very appropriate for this.

Whatever you do add some sugar to your cornbread batter. Makes all the difference.

This is a fantastic idea, and I've got a pork & chocolate chili recipe that I defy you to best! I'll be waiting for my invite, now that I know you're local. I'm waiting.

I could be there with Chili in hand in about 3 1/2 hours drive. I, like Cat, will wait patiently for my "invite"

We need to get in touch, because your dock business idea goes great with my wrench replacement business idea. What a lucky coincidence!

mjenks, plus it's a great opportunity to make silly trophies and hand them out to gullible bringers of chili...

Travis, I totally agree. And hey, if you have a good recipe, pass it along.

Cat, Oooh! Someone else chimed in earlier re: a lamb and chocolate chili! I'll see what I can do to get you on the invite list. ;-)

KC, three and a half? Duluth? Madison?

Steam Me Up, you are a very funny person. :-)

Chili and cornbread. The best. And much more fun than a hangover.

mrwriteon, the hangover is never as good as the cause of said hangover!

And are we all invited???

Lynn said...

Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.
I'll bring my wrench.

Pearl said...

Mom on Spin, I just may have to invite you all, huh?! And you WILL bring chili, right? And beer?
:-)

Lynn, I'll leave the front door open. :-)

Hmmm...I was wondering, do I want my trophy to say 'T'
or 'ICKY' ?
Either way, I will try to act surprised when I win.
:)

Oh yea, if Pearl doesn't have room to host out of towners, I certainly have the room.

I'd love to take part, but sadly the travelling may be prohibitive. I'll be a virtual participant.

A beer and chili "cook off"...will there be a "fart off" the following day? I might stand a chance of winning that one.

Faye (that's my wife, of course) makes the best chili in all of creation. I would bring some up but I would likely have to taste it while she's making it and it is difficult to drive any distance when you have to stop at a restroom every 5 miles.

But it's very good and cures most everything that ails you... eventually.

Mmm. I want chili.

I just recently quit being a vegetarian after 19 years of meat-free existence so it's exciting every time I remember a new food I can eat.

Now I'm craving chili. If yours comes out good, can you send me some? It flash freezes okay, right?

So, a brick of chili coming my way??

Hope you feel better immediately. :)

I'm all chili-ed out. I do love the idea of an Autumn party!
